How Can I Transition from Geotech to a More Work-Life Friendly Career?

Dear Yvonne,

I work in Geotech but I want a job that’s more suitable to balance work and life. Is it viable to do an MBA? What are my chances of making it in this industry? I want to settle down and have children but Geotechnical Engineering takes too much of my time. Work starts at 6.30 and ends at 6.30.

Yvonne says,

Hi, I am always excited to hear about people’s desire to have a more balanced life. To answer your first question, it is always viable to do an MBA (which sometimes is a great way to pivot in your career as well). The question that I believe will be helpful for you to answer is this: is the challenge with the Geotechnical engineering field, or the company/role itself? Are there any flexible working policies/benefits that your company offers, and is this a conversation you’ve considered having with your manager?

Sometimes, connecting with other women in engineering, and in your organisation can help alleviate your doubts and offer support in how you can advocate for your work-life balance internally. It’s worth understanding if the situation can be managed within your current career/role, before making a career change. You may even find out that there are other roles in your firm and in engineering that offer a better work-life balance, but it all starts with questioning, having conversations and advocating for your needs.
